Thermal spraying: your questions answered

What is thermal metal spraying?
Thermal metal spraying (also known as thermal spray coating) is a type of protective coating which applies an outer layer of metal to the substrate material.

At D F Coatings, we offer thermal spray aluminium (TSA) and thermal spray zinc (TSZ) coatings. The coating is applied using gas flame spraying, which heats the metal into a molten state and applies it to the surface using compressed air.

All thermal spray coating applications are carried out by our in-house engineers, who are fully qualified in thermal spraying to BS EN IS ISO 14918 standards.

What materials are compatible with thermal spraying?
Thermal spray aluminium and zinc coatings are typically used for steel finishing and reconditioning, but they can also be applied to a wide range of substrate materials; including metals, ceramics and heat-resistant plastics.

To achieve the best results, steel surfaces should be grit-blasted to SA3 ‘white metal’ standard before the thermal coating is applied. D F Coatings can also provide grit blasting and surface preparation services as part of our thermal metal spraying process.

Will thermal spraying damage the substrate material?

Rest assured, the flame spraying process won’t affect the thermal history or harm the integrity of the surface material.

What coating thickness options are available?

D F Coatings offer thermal coatings from 100 microns (100 µm) up to 250 microns (100 µm) in thickness as standard. We’re also happy to discuss bespoke thickness levels if needed; simply contact us with your requirements.

If you’re not sure which coating thickness you’ll need, our team can provide free impartial advice; simply get in touch for more information.
