Intumescent Coatings and Fire Paints

Protect your business from the devastating impacts of fire. Fire-resistant coating application for all types of industrial infrastructure.

Don’t let your organisation’s finances go up in flames. Our Fire-resistant intumescent coatings offer peace of mind; potentially helping your business minimise losses and bounce back faster if the worst should happen.

In the event of a fire, a intumescent coating can shield key components and structures for up to 120 minutes; potentially saving them from failure and collapse. Intumescent-treated components can also act as fire-stopping protection to prevent fire from spreading throughout your company premises.

DF Coatings Ltd offers intumescent coating solutions for all kinds of industrial infrastructure; including structural steel elements, specialist petrochemical components and highly flammable and combustible items.

Our highly trained team can source and apply a wide range of intumescent coatings to meet UK and international fire safety standards.

Intumescent Coatings

Your questions answered

What are intumescent coatings?

Intumescent coatings (aka intumescent paints or fire paints) are designed to offer a level of passive fire protection (PFP) which can temporarily insulate key structures and components from the extreme heat of a fire.

When exposed to heat, the coating will automatically swell and expand; increasing the volume while also decreasing the density, which slows the transfer of heat into the substrate material underneath. This expanding effect will also help to fill any gaps in the coating to prevent the heat from getting through.

Like all passive fire protection systems, intumescent coatings are intended to ‘buy time’ and delay the impacts of fire until active fire protection systems (AFP) – such as sprinklers, extinguisher tanks, hoses and firefighters – can put out the flames.

How long do intumescent coatings last?

In a fire, an intumescent coating can provide fire protection from 30 minutes up to 120 minutes.

The service life of the coating can vary depending on the type of coating, substrate and surrounding environment. Generally speaking, a intumescent coating will last for at least 10 years before they will need to be replaced.

Do intumescent coatings need to be replaced after a fire?

Yes. Once the coating has been exposed to heat and expanded, it won’t return to its original state and will need to be replaced to ensure protection from any potential fires in the future.

What substrate materials are compatible with intumescent coatings?
D F Coatings can source intumescent coatings for a wide range of surfaces; including structural steel and metals, wood timber, concrete, ceramics and more.
